Yes. Super Duplex stainless steel is widely used for seawater, desalination and other chloride-rich services because of its high resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion compared with conventional austenitic stainless steels. The final material selection should always consider the actual chloride concentration, temperature, pressure and operating conditions of the application.
For demanding seawater and chloride-rich applications, Super Duplex grades with PREN values of approximately 40 or higher are commonly specified. PREN, or Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number, is a useful indicator for comparing resistance to localized corrosion, particularly in chloride-containing environments. However, PREN should not be used as the only selection criterion, as temperature, actual material chemistry and service conditions also influence corrosion performance.
Both Duplex and Super Duplex stainless steels provide improved corrosion resistance compared with conventional austenitic stainless steels, but Super Duplex generally provides higher resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in demanding chloride environments. For seawater, desalination and other high-chloride services, Super Duplex is therefore frequently considered where the service conditions require a higher level of corrosion resistance. Final selection should be based on the actual process conditions and project requirements.
Super Duplex should be considered when the expected chloride exposure, temperature or overall corrosion conditions exceed what can reasonably be handled by 316L stainless steel. This is particularly relevant in seawater, desalination and other chloride-rich applications. Material selection should nevertheless be based on the complete service conditions rather than on the material grade alone.
